October 1st is my anniversary!

It's here again. . . my anniversary is October 1st and I want to celebrate it with you.

This year, I'm booking appointments for TWO days, September 30th and October 1st. On those two days only, you can book a session with me for less than HALF PRICE. Yes, really! Session fees are just $50 and you can book your session for any available time between October 2nd and December 31st.

> Call, e-mail or Facebook me on September 30th or October 1st from 9 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and have your calendar ready - we'll book your session for any available date before December 31st. As always, this time of year gets crazy, so If you do not receive a response from Kay (my assistant) or me within a few hours, please follow up before the end of the day October 1st.

Springtime has sprung! It sure has been a cold and wet winter, but Tallahassee's amazing Azaleas will burst into riots of color very soon and the beautiful Dogwoods will be fresh and white. What a perfect time to get colorful springtime portraits!

For two weekends only, March 11 - 13th and March 18 - 21st, I'm booking appointments for the Third Annual Azalea Special. This special is for children and family portraits at Maclay Gardens and Dorothy Oven Park. Dress the kids in your favorite new spring outfits (think color!) and we'll have a super fun, kid friendly photo session with Tallahassee's gorgeous Azaleas and Dogwoods as the backdrop. Get your Easter outfits early and have beautiful portraits in time for Easter gifts!

Here's the skinny: sessions are for children or for families and are full length sessions.
Session fees are just $50 for up to four people and that includes a $50 print credit. You can apply your print credit to prints, coffee table books, or albums.

Model Call for Paintings!

I'm looking for the very prettiest, most colorful Easter outfits on the most beautiful kids of Tallahassee this weekend!

I have commissioned a local artist to paint some of my very best portraits and that's where you, my fabulous clients, come in.

I need models to pose for me, so for a $20 session fee you will get a 10 minute mini photo session at Dorothy B. Oven Park this Saturday or Sunday. As part of your session fee, you will receive a free 5x7 of your favorite photo and photo packages will be offered at a significant savings.

The artist will select three of the best portraits to paint. If your child's portrait is chosen, you will receive the 4x5 painting on gorgeous water color paper in an 8x10 mat and your painting will be featured on my website to announce my new product!

Here's the skinny:

When you book your session, I will e-mail you pricing information for photo packages. Individual prints will be available with packages as well.

You must book your session no later than 12 noon on April 2nd, payment is by Visa or MasterCard and cancelations must be received 24 hours in advance of your appointment time.

Children should be able to sit up on their own and can't be older than 16 years of age. Dogs are welcome, too! Just make sure they're on a leash at all times (this is a city park) and you might want to get a special collar and leash for the occasion - think color!

As photographers, we are always trying to get better. And how do we do that. . . . well we push the envelope a bit and compete against our fellow photographers! Print Competition at our local Tallahassee Professional Photographer's Guild is a fabulous way for us to show our work and vote on the 'best of the best'. The best part of competing? Ok, other than winning? Having your image critiqued by other photographers! Its learning on steroids and having your image (which you thought was AMAZING)be picked apart. There's a little state park beach over on the east coast called Big Talbot Island that's nothing like you'll ever see in the rest of Florida. Big cliffs with amazing driftwood all over the beach, it truly is a unique place to visit. Stephanie and Peter picked this spot for their ceremony last August and it was just perfect. Quiet, tucked away and gorgeous. With the reception afterwards at O'Kanes in Fernandina Beach, it really was a perfect day.

Elaine and Joe welcomed Addison Mae to the world on June 12th at 2:28, isn't she just beautiful? I enjoyed our session so much in thier home - little Addison was just chillin and made my job super easy. Enjoy!

We managed to almost get her to sleep, but this lasted for about 3 seconds. . . long enough to get the shot.

They were my very first subjects and thank goodness they're happy posing for me (or at least ignoring me and looking cute so I get fabulous photos). Here are some of my favorites from my family's trip to Disney last fall. . . and to answer your next question: Yes, I will absolutely go with you to Disney and take amazing photos like these! I would NEVER pass up a trip to the Happiest Place on Earth with my camera.

TPPG Salon Competition

Turns out there's an entire world out there I didn't know anything about until just last year. Its called Salon. Competition between photographers where prints are judged on 12 points. When somebody first told me about it I remember thinking "Compete? No way, Jose. Put my work up there for the entire WORLD to critique? Yeah. No. I'm good. I can forever be happy with my pretty pictures without having anybody tell me what's wrong with them." But it turns out that I have a lot, a LOT to learn. And learning is good. Learning gets you places. Learning is how we grow, no matter how painful.

So with the help of my fellow Tallahassee Guild members I did a little brainstorming, picked one of my favorte images, and after lots of work entered it into the Tallahassee Professional Photographers Guild Annual Salon last night.

Three judges critiqued and judged my print and gave it a score of 78. Ok, so let me explain that number. To merit and get a ribbon is has to be 80 or higher. A 78 is between "Good" and "Very Good" and is rejudged for the merit. I didn't get the merit, but for my first ever? Hey, I'll take that 78!

So back to the computer for lots more work and I might just enter it again, this time at the state level.

Have you noticed? Its FINALLY Springtime! The azaleas are starting their annual fireworks show, the beautiful dogwoods are fresh and white, the daffodils are poking up. My fingers are finally thawing!

I think its time to celebrate the coming spring and get some fabulous photos. For two days only, Thursday March 12th and Sunday March 15th, I'm taking appointments for children's sessions at Maclay Gardens.

Here's the skinny: sessions are for children 18 and younger. I will take photos of up to 4 children for these sessions, the session is for 30 minutes and its only $65! Dress the kids in your favorite new spring outfits (think color!) and we'll have a no-fuss, no muss photo session with Tallahassee's very best in Azaleas and Dogwoods as the backdrop.

One of my favorite places in Tallahassee to have a photo session is Tallahassee Nurseries. They have the coolest garden furniture, the brightest colors and fabulous brick walkways to meander. Lots of shade and the little guys have plenty to look at and keep them happy while I'm busy capturing it all.

Robin Adams Photography Workshops

Do you know what ISO means? What's an f-stop? Wonder what all those funky dials are on your camera? Why does that symbol keep coming up when you flip the gizmo-thingy? It's crazy how sophisticated cameras are these days. And you bought it hoping for fabulous photos, right? But it’s just not happening, and the manual isn't any help.

I can help! I love to teach photography and I currently have several workshops throughout the year:

Basic Principles: This is your chance to learn what the dials do, which ones to fiddle with, and which buttons don't matter. Learn how to lock in focus once and for all. Figure out what ISO, shutter speed, and aperture is and how all three work together. Best of all, we'll learn how to take photos in manual mode. Yes, really! Manual!

Getting Artistic: Putting it all together to get really beautiful images, not just snapshots. We’ll talk about framing your subject in an interesting, artistic way, the rule of thirds, catch lights, and depth of field.

I will be holding eight workshops in 2010, starting in early January. The cost for each workshop is $35 per person, prepaid. We'll have models, munchies and drinks, and a great location. After an hour or so inside with instructions and demonstrations, we'll go outside to continue learning and practice, practice, practice.

Merry Christmas to Julie and her children! What deserving families I've heard about. . . . and it was tough choosing, I have to say. Julie will receive $1,000 in photography and Meredith her dear friend that nominated her for Giving is Awesome, wins $300 in photography.

I had seven entries, but after reading Meredith's words, I really felt like Julie might need something special for her family this Christmas. I will post Julie's story (and images, of course) later . . . check the blog soon!
